Compare common reference rectangles without confusing the printed image, full sheet and stretched canvas.

Measure the sheet, then the printed image.
A poster sold as 18 × 24 may contain a smaller image with a white border, or the image may run to the edge. The nominal format does not tell you which. Measure the full sheet for the frame and decide which area the mat should reveal.
Canvas has a third dimension
A stretched canvas has width, height and depth. These tools cover width and height only. A frame designed for a flat print may not accept a stretched canvas. Floater-frame gaps, recess depth and clearance are manufacturer-specific; request their actual dimensions.
A-series is a separate size family.
A2 is 420 × 594 mm, approximately 16.535 × 23.386 inches. An 18 × 24 nominal rectangle is larger in both directions. A4 is not US Letter, and A3 is not 11 × 17.
Compare A-series dimensions or compare any two catalog sizes. For a mat, start from the full print dimensions.
A visual size estimate. Verify the actual artwork, frame, mat, glazing, hardware, wall and manufacturer specifications before buying or arranging a display. Dimensions alone do not guarantee fit.
