24 × 36 frame size
24×36 is a 2:3 poster rectangle, measuring two by three feet before any frame molding. A frame labeled 24×36 and a larger frame matted for a 24×36 print are different dimension plans.
Artwork is the full sheet. Nominal frame size is the stated insert reference. The visible opening is the area left after the frame lip or mat covers the edges. Actual frames, mats, rabbets and listed openings vary by manufacturer; these dimensions do not guarantee fit, preservation, hanging safety, load capacity or compatibility.

Swapping width and height changes portrait to landscape without changing area. Product features determine which orientations a particular frame supports. A matching ratio preserves shape when scaling an image; it does not make different physical sheet sizes interchangeable.
Without a mat: start with the full 24 × 36 sheet
Compare a frame described for a 24 × 36-inch insert. Measure any printed paper margin as part of that sheet. Do not subtract the front lip from the artwork dimensions unless the supplier explicitly asks for a visible-window measurement. The back opening, depth and clearance must come from the specific product; no universal rabbet allowance is assumed here.
24×36 versus 27×40 movie-poster listings
A 27×40 sheet is 3 inches wider and 4 inches taller. It is not an unmatted match for a 24×36 frame, and its ratio also differs. Do not select a frame based only on the words “movie poster”: editions, reproductions and sellers can use different sheet formats. 2:3 enlargement versus physical fit
12×18 and 20×30 photos share the 24×36 ratio. You can preserve their composition when resizing a digital image, subject to the available pixels and printing choices. An existing 20×30 physical print still needs its own window if used behind a 24×36 mat board. Matching ratios alone does not bridge that space.
Allow for the whole printed sheet
A 24×36 image with an added paper border is physically larger than 24×36. Conversely, a 24×36 sheet might carry a smaller centered image. These two cases need different nominal-frame calculations even when the visible image dimensions are identical. Record both before comparing the examples below.
With a mat around a full 24 × 36 print
These centered examples use ⅛ inch overlap on each artwork edge, producing a 23.75 × 35.75-inch window. This is an editable illustration, not a prescribed cut. Board sizes are comparison scenarios, including possible custom dimensions; stock availability is not asserted.

Centered border = (outer board − window) ÷ 2

Smaller artwork inside a 24 × 36 outer board
This reverses the question: keep the nominal frame at 24 × 36, then compare smaller pictures. It is useful when a listing says “matted to” a smaller photo size. These are calculated scenarios, not a claim about an included mat.

Before comparing a frame listing
- Confirm the full sheet and the portion of the image that must remain visible.
- Identify the nominal insert, outer mat board and exact cut window separately.
- Request the actual back opening, rabbet depth and manufacturer tolerances. Width and height alone cannot establish suitability for thick artwork.
- Use the listed outside dimensions for a visual gallery layout; these tables do not provide them.
Questions about 24 × 36 frames
Is 60×90 cm the same as 24×36?
No. 24×36 inches is 60.96×91.44 cm. The metric rectangle is smaller by 9.6 mm and 14.4 mm.
Can an 18×24 picture go behind a 24×36 mat?
It is nominally smaller, but the side and top/bottom borders will differ considerably. Use the fixed-board table and confirm the supplier’s cut window.
