For a movie poster actually measuring 27×40 inches, compare that full sheet with a nominal 27×40 insert. “Movie poster” alone is not a reliable size specification.
Artwork is the full sheet. Nominal frame size is the stated insert reference. The visible opening is the area left after the frame lip or mat covers the edges. Actual frames, mats, rabbets and listed openings vary by manufacturer; these dimensions do not guarantee fit, preservation, hanging safety, load capacity or compatibility.

Swapping width and height changes portrait to landscape without changing area. Product features determine which orientations a particular frame supports. A matching ratio preserves shape when scaling an image; it does not make different physical sheet sizes interchangeable.
Without a mat: start with the full 27 × 40 sheet
Compare a frame described for a 27 × 40-inch insert. Measure any printed paper margin as part of that sheet. Do not subtract the front lip from the artwork dimensions unless the supplier explicitly asks for a visible-window measurement. The back opening, depth and clearance must come from the specific product; no universal rabbet allowance is assumed here.
Check 27×40, 27×41 and 24×36 separately
A 27×41 sheet is one inch taller than 27×40; a 24×36 is smaller in both directions. A reproduction can use a different format from another edition of the same artwork. Billing text and printed margins affect the window
A film poster can place text close to its edges. The illustrative ⅛-inch overlap would reveal a 26.75×39.75 window, hiding a strip on each side. Decide which parts of the print must remain visible and confirm the supplier’s actual front opening or mat window. Do not automatically deduct an allowance when the seller already does so from the artwork size.
A 24×36 print inside a 27×40 board
The sample 23.75×35.75 window leaves 1.625-inch side borders and 2.125-inch top/bottom borders. The same named frame may therefore be advertised for a smaller picture with a mat. That does not make a 27×40 full-sheet poster compatible with the smaller window.

Smaller artwork inside a 27 × 40 outer board
This reverses the question: keep the nominal frame at 27 × 40, then compare smaller pictures. It is useful when a listing says “matted to” a smaller photo size. These are calculated scenarios, not a claim about an included mat.

- Confirm the full sheet and the portion of the image that must remain visible.
- Identify the nominal insert, outer mat board and exact cut window separately.
- Request the actual back opening, rabbet depth and manufacturer tolerances. Width and height alone cannot establish suitability for thick artwork.
- Use the listed outside dimensions for a visual gallery layout; these tables do not provide them.

Is a 27×40 poster exactly 2:3?
No. Its ratio is 27:40, or 0.675 in the listed order, versus 0.6667 for 2:3. Similar proportions do not make the two shapes identical.
