Swapping width and height changes portrait to landscape without changing area. Product features determine which orientations a particular frame supports. A matching ratio preserves shape when scaling an image; it does not make different physical sheet sizes interchangeable.
Without a mat: start with the full 14 × 18 sheet
Compare a frame described for a 14 × 18-inch insert. Measure any printed paper margin as part of that sheet. Do not subtract the front lip from the artwork dimensions unless the supplier explicitly asks for a visible-window measurement. The back opening, depth and clearance must come from the specific product; no universal rabbet allowance is assumed here.
14×18 versus 12×16
The larger rectangle adds 2 inches to both dimensions but does not keep the same ratio: 14×18 is 7:9, while 12×16 is 3:4. Fitting a 12×16 image within a 14×18 print gives 13.5×18, leaving 0.5 inch of total side space. Filling the 14×18 shape instead produces a 14×18.667 scaled image and crops about 0.667 inch from its height in total. These are image-resizing alternatives, not changes to an existing sheet.
The 14×18 outer board can mean a smaller picture
A 10×14 sheet behind a 14×18 board gives equal dimension differences. At ⅛-inch overlap, its 9.75×13.75 window leaves 2.125-inch borders all around. An 11×14 picture in the same board gives 1.625-inch side borders and 2.125-inch top and bottom borders. Read the intended picture size and the outside mat size separately when both appear in a title.
18×22 and 18×24 give different surrounds
For a full 14×18 sheet, the sample 13.75×17.75 window produces equal 2.125-inch borders in an 18×22 board. An 18×24 board keeps those side borders but increases the top and bottom to 3.125 inches. Both are mathematical board comparisons, including possible custom cuts. Neither table supplies the frame molding’s outside dimensions or a supplier’s minimum mat width.
With a mat around a full 14 × 18 print

Smaller artwork inside a 14 × 18 outer board

- Confirm the full sheet and the portion of the image that must remain visible.
- Identify the nominal insert, outer mat board and exact cut window separately.
- Request the actual back opening, rabbet depth and manufacturer tolerances. Width and height alone cannot establish suitability for thick artwork.
- Use the listed outside dimensions for a visual gallery layout; these tables do not provide them.
