Compare photo dimensions, aspect ratios and the pixels needed for a chosen print resolution.

A larger print can have a different shape.
4 × 6 and 8 × 12 have matching proportions. A 5 × 7 or 8 × 10 has a different ratio. If a printing service fills the new shape, some content may be cropped; if it fits the full image, blank borders may remain.
Print size and frame size
The full sheet size goes into the frame or behind the mat. The image area may stop inside that sheet. For example, an 8 × 10 image on an 11 × 14 sheet is an 11 × 14 physical artwork when checking the frame opening.
Worked comparison: 4 × 6 to 8 × 10
A 2:3 image filling a 4:5 print loses 16.67% of its image area. Choosing 8 × 12 preserves its proportions. A mat can hide still more of the image around the edge.
