8 × 11 frame size
An 8×11 frame is not the same nominal size as an 8½×11 Letter frame. Confirm the half-inch difference before comparing document or art-print listings.
Artwork is the full sheet. Nominal frame size is the stated insert reference. The visible opening is the area left after the frame lip or mat covers the edges. Actual frames, mats, rabbets and listed openings vary by manufacturer; these dimensions do not guarantee fit, preservation, hanging safety, load capacity or compatibility.

Swapping width and height changes portrait to landscape without changing area. Product features determine which orientations a particular frame supports. A matching ratio preserves shape when scaling an image; it does not make different physical sheet sizes interchangeable.
Without a mat: start with the full 8 × 11 sheet
Compare a frame described for a 8 × 11-inch insert. Measure any printed paper margin as part of that sheet. Do not subtract the front lip from the artwork dimensions unless the supplier explicitly asks for a visible-window measurement. The back opening, depth and clearance must come from the specific product; no universal rabbet allowance is assumed here.
The missing half-inch matters
A full Letter sheet is 8.5 inches wide, so it exceeds an 8×11 nominal opening by 0.5 inch. Rotating the sheet does not make those dimensions a direct match. If your artwork really measures 8×11, use that measurement; if “8×11” was shorthand for Letter, use the actual 8.5×11 guide and calculator values.
An 11×14 board adds the same amount in both directions
For an actual 8×11 sheet, the board exceeds its width and height by 3 inches. The example 7.75×10.75 window therefore leaves equal 1.625-inch borders. Letter paper in the same board gives unequal borders because its width is different. This is a useful way to catch a mistaken input before comparing a mat listing.
8:11 is its own aspect ratio
An 8×10 image scaled to 11 inches tall becomes 8.8 inches wide. Filling an 8×11 sheet would crop part of that width; fitting the whole image instead leaves space at the top and bottom. Decide the image treatment separately from the full-sheet frame size.

Window = artwork − 2 × overlap
Centered border = (outer board − window) ÷ 2

Smaller artwork inside a 8 × 11 outer board
This reverses the question: keep the nominal frame at 8 × 11, then compare smaller pictures. It is useful when a listing says “matted to” a smaller photo size. These are calculated scenarios, not a claim about an included mat.

Before comparing a frame listing
- Confirm the full sheet and the portion of the image that must remain visible.
- Identify the nominal insert, outer mat board and exact cut window separately.
- Request the actual back opening, rabbet depth and manufacturer tolerances. Width and height alone cannot establish suitability for thick artwork.
- Use the listed outside dimensions for a visual gallery layout; these tables do not provide them.

Retailer naming varies. Treat it as an exact nominal 8×11 reference, not an alias for US Letter, and verify both dimensions in the product specification.
