Puzzle frame sizes

Measure the finished puzzle’s width, height and thickness. Piece count and box size do not identify the frame opening you need.

This guide covers rectangular dimensions and neutral window comparisons. It does not give assembly, adhesive, preservation, hanging, glass or load-capacity instructions. Frames, mats, rabbets and openings vary by manufacturer; a numeric match does not guarantee fit or compatibility.

Two 1,000-piece puzzles, different finished sizes

The Buffalo Games product below lists a 26.75×19.75-inch finished puzzle. Ravensburger’s example lists 70×50 cm. Both are 1,000-piece puzzles, but their dimensions and ratios differ. These are specific manufacturer examples, not universal dimensions for either brand.

Box dimensions are not puzzle dimensions

A product page can list package width, package height and depth near its finished-size field. Copy the finished puzzle measurement, then compare it with the actual assembled rectangle. Ravensburger’s own FAQ describes its published puzzle sizes as approximate because production can change the final dimensions. Keep that uncertainty when converting units.

Without a mat: compare the full finished rectangle

If your measured puzzle is 19.75×26.75 inches in portrait order, begin with that exact insert comparison; landscape reverses it to 26.75×19.75. A nominal 20×27 rectangle leaves only 0.25 inch of total extra space in each direction. The actual back opening and visible front opening determine what that means for a specific frame. A front lip may cover puzzle edges even when the back opening is large enough.

The 70×50 cm example is about 27.559 inches long, exceeding a nominal 27-inch side. Rounding it to “20×27” can hide a meaningful difference. Measure thickness too: puzzle and backing depth are not established by a two-dimensional size chart.

With a mat: an optional dimension comparison

A mat can cover edge pieces or image details. If that is not the intended result, do not adopt an overlap example automatically. The table models a rectangular 19.75×26.75-inch puzzle with ⅛ inch of coverage per edge solely to show the arithmetic. It does not establish a suitable support or preservation method.

Adjust this puzzle mat example. The visible window is smaller than the puzzle; the outer board is larger. Neither is the outside dimension of the finished frame.

Why “1,000-piece puzzle frame” is not enough

Can a 20×28 or 20×30 frame fit my puzzle?

Compare both dimensions and the actual frame depth. A 19.75×26.75 rectangle is nominally smaller than either, but that observation does not specify a suitable mat or support. A 50×70 cm rectangle has a different width and height again. Use the 20×28 guide and 20×30 guide for neutral board comparisons, then verify the product’s exact dimensions.

Does portrait versus landscape change the required size?

The same rectangular puzzle keeps its area and side lengths when rotated. Its image has an intended top, and the frame’s product features determine which orientation it supports. For a visual arrangement, obtain the frame’s actual outside dimensions separately.
