Swapping width and height changes portrait to landscape without changing area. Product features determine which orientations a particular frame supports. A matching ratio preserves shape when scaling an image; it does not make different physical sheet sizes interchangeable.
Without a mat: start with the full 11 × 16 sheet
Compare a frame described for a 11 × 16-inch insert. Measure any printed paper margin as part of that sheet. Do not subtract the front lip from the artwork dimensions unless the supplier explicitly asks for a visible-window measurement. The back opening, depth and clearance must come from the specific product; no universal rabbet allowance is assumed here.
11×16 is not shorthand for 11×17
An 11×17 sheet is an inch taller, while a 12×16 sheet is an inch wider. Rotating any of these rectangles does not make the full sheets identical. If a product lists 11×16 as its visible window rather than its insert size, the actual outer board can be larger again. Read the field labels and measure any printed paper margin as part of the full sheet.
Near 2:3 proportions still change the crop
A 10×15 image has a 2:3 ratio. At 11 inches wide it becomes 11×16.5, so filling an 11×16 print removes 0.5 inch of its scaled height in total. Fitting the entire image to a 16-inch height gives approximately 10.667×16, leaving a narrow blank strip on each side when centered. That image choice is independent of mat overlap around the resulting physical print.
One inch of extra board width changes only the side borders
An 11×16 full sheet produces a 10.75×15.75 window at the example overlap. In a 15×20 board all borders are 2.125 inches. In a 16×20 board the side borders increase to 2.625 inches while the top and bottom remain 2.125. This isolates the effect of width without changing the artwork or window. The 15×20 scenario is a dimensional calculation, not an availability claim.
With a mat around a full 11 × 16 print

Smaller artwork inside a 11 × 16 outer board

- Confirm the full sheet and the portion of the image that must remain visible.
- Identify the nominal insert, outer mat board and exact cut window separately.
- Request the actual back opening, rabbet depth and manufacturer tolerances. Width and height alone cannot establish suitability for thick artwork.
- Use the listed outside dimensions for a visual gallery layout; these tables do not provide them.

Can I use an 11×17 frame for an 11×16 sheet?
Its nominal rectangle is taller but not wider. That comparison does not define a mat, backing or manufacturer allowance. Obtain the actual insert and visible opening instead of inferring a complete solution from one extra inch.
Does “11×16 mat with frame” identify the outside dimensions?
It may identify the intended artwork, the cut window or the outer board. Confirm all three and obtain the separate exterior molding dimensions.
